bol-ivoire-craquele-zodiaque-dore-vintage
Gold zodiac crackled ivory bowl

Fine stoneware with a finely crackled ivory glaze (kannyu), topped with a frieze of interlaced lozenges traced in gold and highlighted in red and green. Along this frieze are Japanese characters painted in red, each corresponding to a sign of the zodiac (here, notably 巳, the snake). Inside, a small four-petaled flower-shaped medallion features a single gold character on a green background, identifying this specific bowl.

This type of bowl most likely belonged to a set of twelve, one for each sign of the Japanese zodiac (jūnishi). At the table, each person would find their bowl by the character of their birth year painted inside, rather than using identical tableware for everyone: a very concrete way to personalize a set without tags or initials. Used as an individual rice bowl, it is held in the hand and never set down for someone to dip a communal spoon into.

A vintage piece with the crackled glaze characteristic of Japanese ivory stoneware and hand-applied gilding. A small mark is incised under the foot, but it does not allow for a precise workshop to be identified with certainty: origin and attribution remain to be confirmed rather than stated as fact.

Care: hand wash only. The gilding and enamels suffer from dishwashers and abrasive sponges; wipe this bowl with a soft cloth and avoid leaving it to soak.

Estimated dimensions: diameter 12 to 13 cm, height 6 to 7 cm (to be confirmed by direct measurement).
