Product description

This chawan is a poem to hold in your hands. On its outer wall, cursive Japanese calligraphy runs freely, incised into the clay before firing, as if the potter had wished to entrust a secret to the earth before committing it to the flames. The characters, traced with a sure and relaxed gesture, belong to that Japanese tradition which does not distinguish writing from art: to calligraph is already to paint.

The hakeme glaze, applied with a wide rice straw brush, reveals its brushstrokes in the white, semi-transparent material, which allows the warm brown of the earth beneath to show through. This layering—white over brown, opacity over transparency—creates a subtle depth that the eye discovers little by little.

The interior reveals the natural, rust-brown drips of the glaze, the concentric circles of the wheel-throwing, and the full life of a handmade object devoid of artifice. The foot of speckled natural stoneware sets the bowl upon the table with total frankness. Only one piece available, for those who know how to read beauty even when it is silent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hakeme glaze visible on this bowl?

It is a white slip applied with a wide rice-straw brush, which leaves its brushstrokes visible in the semi-transparent material.

Can I rub the carved calligraphy when cleaning it?

No, do not rub it, to keep the incisions sharp; wash it by hand in clean water, without detergent.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No, never.

How to use it?

A chawan is a Japanese tea bowl, here made for matcha, the powdered green tea whisked in hot water.
What it is for: you add the powder and water, whisk with a chasen, then drink straight from the bowl. Its wide shape leaves room for the whisking.
Warm the bowl with hot water before preparing matcha.
Whisk the tea in its wide, open shape: it leaves room for the whisk and makes the gesture comfortable.
Wash by hand in clear water, without detergent. Do not scrub the engraved calligraphy, to keep the incisions crisp. Never in the dishwasher.
Set on a dark cloth, it brings out the whiteness of the glaze and the calligraphy.
Idea: leave it on the table beside the kettle: it is a piece to look at as much as to use.
Good to know: hot but not boiling water, around 70 to 80 °C, keeps the matcha smooth.
