Product description
This chawan is a visual poem dedicated to longevity. On its wall, a crane with wings spread fans out its plumage, engraved with fine, precise lines, its head adorned with the vermilion red dot that makes it instantly recognizable. Beneath it, discreet yet present, a tortoise motif engraved in relief completes this legendary duo of Japanese culture: the tsurukame couple, the quintessential symbol of longevity, happiness, and good fortune.
The gray-blue celadon glaze, soft and crackled, gives the whole piece an old look. Its fine cracks, visible across the entire surface, are reminiscent of the Song and Koryo porcelains that inspired Japanese celadon. The slightly iridescent interior, appearing almost pearlescent depending on the light, adds a precious dimension to the whole.
But it is the hexagonal foot, absolutely rare and sophisticated, that reveals the artisan's mastery. Six precisely carved faces, a deliberate choice that distinguishes this bowl from ordinary pieces. Only one available, a piece that carries within it Japan's most ancient wishes.
