Product description

This chawan is a lesson in humility and courage. No sophisticated glaze, no painted decoration, no seeking of color. Just the earth, the fire, and what results when a craftsman has the wisdom not to intervene further. The dark, granular surface of this bowl, scattered with ochre and golden deposits left by the ash suspended in the kiln, is a mineral landscape of a richness that no artificial glaze could achieve.

Its form is deliberately imperfect. The irregular rim, slightly notched on one side as if by the thumb of a determined potter, the asymmetrical silhouette that rejects overly easy symmetry: everything here is intentional, deliberate, deeply Japanese. It is the Bizen spirit in all its purity, that thousand-year-old tradition that trusts the material alone to produce beauty.

To hold this bowl in one’s hands is to hold something earthy, solid, and ancient. It carries the weight of a stone picked up by the side of a path. Only one piece available, for those who know that true rarity does not need decoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this bowl have no visible glaze?

It is a deliberate choice: the surface comes only from the clay, the fire and the natural ash deposits left during firing in a traditional kiln.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No, wash it in clean water only, without any product, and let it air-dry rather than using a tea towel, so as not to wear the grainy surface.

Will the surface change with use?

Yes, it is porous and will gradually absorb the aromas of tea, which enriches it over time.

How to use it?

A chawan is a Japanese tea bowl, here made for matcha, the powdered green tea whisked in hot water.
What it is for: you add the powder and water, whisk with a chasen, then drink straight from the bowl. Its wide shape leaves room for the whisking.
Before first use, soak the bowl in cold water to hydrate it. Warm it with hot water before each matcha.
Wash in clear water only, with no products. Never in the dishwasher.
Air dry, never with a tea towel, so as not to abrade the grainy surface.
The porous surface gradually absorbs the aromas of the tea and develops over time.
Idea: bring it out for an afternoon tea for two, with a chasen and a small matcha scoop.
Good to know: sift the matcha before adding water for fewer lumps and a finer foam.
