Product description

This chawan strikes before it is even touched. The radical contrast between the glossy black lacquer crowning the bowl and the large, cream-beige stretches emerging from the body like landmasses is of rare visual power. It evokes an abstract world map, a landscape of snow and night, or ink diluting in water. It brings everything to mind, and yet nothing at all, which is precisely the state of mind sought by the tea ceremony.

The Setoguro glaze, one of the most dramatic in the entire Japanese tradition, is achieved through a spectacular technique: the bowl is removed from the kiln while glowing red-hot and rapidly cooled in the open air, which instantly fixes the deep black and creates those irregular boundary effects between the differently glazed areas. Each piece is therefore literally unique, shaped by an irreversible gesture.

The wide, textured foot, covered in brown and rust-colored deposits, anchors the bowl in the earth with total frankness. Only one piece available, a work that resembles no other and will never resemble anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the black and beige contrast of the Setoguro glaze achieved?

The bowl is taken out of the kiln while hot and cooled abruptly, a traditional technique that produces this dramatic contrast between glossy black and lighter areas.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No, the black glaze is sensitive to chemicals; wash it by hand in clean water, without detergent or abrasive sponge.

How does this bowl show off matcha?

The deep black of the glaze makes the green matcha froth stand out strikingly.

How to use it?

A chawan is a Japanese tea bowl, here made for matcha, the powdered green tea whisked in hot water.
What it is for: you add the powder and water, whisk with a chasen, then drink straight from the bowl. Its wide shape leaves room for the whisking.
Warm the bowl with hot water before preparing matcha: the deep black of the glaze sets off the green foam.
Wash by hand in clear water, without detergent or abrasive sponge. Never in the dishwasher: the black glaze is sensitive to chemicals.
Dry with a soft cloth right after washing.
To display it, set it on a light stand: the contrast is all the sharper.
Idea: leave it on the table beside the kettle: it is a piece to look at as much as to use.
Good to know: hot but not boiling water, around 70 to 80 °C, keeps the matcha smooth.
