Product description

Hand-thrown stoneware with a deep blue, almost midnight-blue glaze, becoming even darker towards the base where it shifts to plum. Inside, a swirl is visible at the bottom of the bowl: the mark left by the potter smoothing the clay before firing, captured beneath the clear glaze that covers it. The unglazed foot reveals the raw clay, the wheel marks, and a small incised mark, likely a signature.

A bowl of this size, which fits entirely in the palm of one hand, serves just as well as an individual rice bowl as a chawan for matcha, prepared and whisked directly inside. You hold it in your hand to feel the warmth of the rice or tea through the thick walls, and the swirl at the bottom is only revealed with the very last spoonful, once the bowl is nearly empty.

An incised mark appears under the foot, but it remains impossible to read with certainty: it is impossible to attribute this piece to a specific ceramicist. The presence of a signature rather than a simple factory stamp does, however, suggest an individual studio piece, though this cannot be stated with certainty.

Care: hand washing recommended. Avoid the dishwasher, which dulls the luster of the cobalt glaze over time, and sudden thermal shocks.

Estimated dimensions: diameter 10 to 11 cm, height 7 to 8 cm (to be confirmed by direct measurement).

The raw clay, the throwing rings and a small incised mark, probably a signature.

How to use it?

A Japanese ceramic bowl, designed for everyday life: you hold it in your hand close to your mouth, the Japanese way.
What it is for: you serve rice, soup, a stew or breakfast in it. One bowl is enough for several uses.
Use it as an individual rice bowl.
Or as a chawan: prepare and whisk matcha directly in it. Its thick wall holds heat well.
At the bottom, the swirl is the potter's trace, visible under the clear glaze.
Wash by hand.
Idea: at breakfast, fill it with yogurt, fresh fruit and granola, or hot rice with an egg.
Good to know: slight variations in shape, colour or glaze are possible from one piece to another.

Everyday plain rice, or matcha tea prepared and whisked directly in the bowl.
