Product description
The gesture
Place a salad, fruit, or an assortment to share at the center of the table rather than an individual dish; its wide, shallow shape highlights the pattern as much as it facilitates serving several people.
Why it is different
A piece from the Hikiyose collection (La Luz, Japan) that combines two distinct areas of expertise: kijibiki, woodturning from a solid block, and yosegi, marquetry that assembles different wood species into geometric patterns. The result is this continuous chevron pattern that unfolds from the edge to the center, visible identically both inside and on the rim. The design received the Good Design Award in 2014.
Why this marquetry instead of a painted or printed pattern
The pattern does not come from any paint or printing: it is born from strips of wood of different natural hues, assembled before turning, so that the wood grain itself draws the chevrons.
Why I chose it
“I chose this size because it seems particularly perfect for everyday life. It has enough presence to be a true centerpiece, yet remains easy to use daily. What I like most is this sense of simplicity that turned wood provides: nothing seems to have been added, and yet the form is enough to give the object character.”
You will love it if
- you host and love sharing a dish at the center of the table
- you are sensitive to an object prized for its design rather than its folklore
- you appreciate a pattern that comes from wood assembly, not an added decoration
It is probably not for you if
- you are looking for an individual bowl rather than a dish to share
- hand washing only (no microwave, no prolonged exposure to sun or moisture) does not suit you
In practice
Solid turned and marquetry wood, approximately 23 cm in diameter. Hand wash; avoid dishwashers, microwaves, and prolonged exposure to sun or moisture.
An object designed to last
Solid wood, maintained simply (hand washing), retains its pattern and shape over time.
