Product description

This white porcelain bowl features hand-painted decoration: peonies and their foliage drawn in underglaze cobalt blue, with petals accented by a delicate pink applied over the top during a second firing. The foot, left unglazed, reveals the bare porcelain, and a cobalt blue mark is visible on the base.

Its size, approximately 12 cm in diameter, corresponds to an individual rice bowl (chawan) such as those found at every place setting in Japan: one lifts it and holds it near the mouth, pushing the rice with chopsticks, rather than leaving it on the table like a Western plate. It works just as well for miso soup or a dessert presented at height.

This piece bears a mark, but I cannot decipher it or attribute it to a specific workshop. It remains desirable for what it is: a hand-painted piece, not a mass-produced identical series.

Care: hand washing is recommended to preserve the luster of the painted highlights; avoid dishwashers and abrasive sponges on the decoration.

Estimated dimensions: approximately 12 cm in diameter, 6.5 cm in height (to be confirmed by direct measurement).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the blue and pink contrast on this bowl achieved?

The peony pattern is painted in cobalt blue under the glaze, then the petals are highlighted with pink applied during a second firing.

What is a chawan?

It is an individual rice bowl that you lift and bring close to the mouth, pushing the rice with chopsticks, rather than leaving it on the table.

What size is it?

About 12 cm in diameter.

How to use it?

A Japanese ceramic bowl, designed for everyday life: you hold it in your hand close to your mouth, the Japanese way.
What it is for: you serve rice, soup, a stew or breakfast in it. One bowl is enough for several uses.
Use it as an individual rice bowl (chawan): you lift it and bring it close to your mouth, pushing the rice with your chopsticks.
It also suits miso soup.
Wash by hand and dry carefully.
Idea: plate a simple dinner in it, rice, a simmered dish and pickles, for an effortless Japanese table.
Good to know: each piece is hand-picked in Japan, so yours may differ slightly from the photos.

To be left to your discretion (morning rice, miso soup, individual dessert)
