Product description

The gesture

Pour cold sake (10-12°C) until it reaches the top of the mountain engraved at the bottom of the cup, a gesture that combines tasting with a small visual reference point.

Why it is different

Hand-crafted from pure tin, with a motif of Mount Fuji engraved at the bottom (Suzuku Fujiyama, 錐富士山), invisible until the cup is filled, it reveals itself as you drink. Compact size (approx. 40 mL), delivered in a presentation box.

Why this cup rather than a classic glass

The hand-shaping, repeated hammering and polishing before engraving the motif follow the wabi-sabi philosophy, which respects the raw material rather than seeking a perfectly smooth finish.

Why I chose it

"I chose this bowl because I really like objects whose function is discovered through a detail. Here, the shape also allows for pouring, without turning the object into a complicated utensil. I liked this simplicity: you can use it as a bowl, then discover that it can do a little more. It is exactly the kind of functional detail that I like to spot in Japan."

You will like it if

  • you occasionally enjoy sake and like a small serving ritual
  • you appreciate a detail that is discovered through use rather than at first glance
  • you are looking for a compact object that is easy to give as a gift (box included)

It is probably not for you if

  • you are looking for a large container for generous pours (tasting size, approx. 40 mL)
  • you prefer a versatile object that is dishwasher safe

In practice

Height approx. 35 mm, diameter approx. 73 mm, capacity approx. 40 mL, weight with box approx. 154 g. Rinse with warm water before first use, never put in the dishwasher or expose to high temperatures, wipe dry immediately after use.

An object designed to last

Pure tin develops a patina over time rather than tarnishing irreparably; simple maintenance (immediate wiping) is enough to preserve it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this bowl develop a patina over time?

Pure tin is a malleable metal whose shine changes naturally with use, which is part of its character.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No, it must be washed by hand and wiped straight away, without exposing it to high temperatures.

Who makes this pouring bowl?

It is shaped by hand by the craftsmen of Nousaku in Takaoka, a Japanese city known for its metalwork for more than 400 years.

How to use it?

A small pewter cup, a metal traditionally used in Japan for serving sake, the Japanese rice wine.
What it is for: you pour sake or another fine drink into it. Pewter keeps drinks cool, and the cup is easy to hold and set down.
Pour in cold sake (10 to 12 °C) up to the peak of the mountain engraved at the bottom of the cup: it is your guide.
Use it for delicate drinks (sake, fine infusions). The spout also lets you pour.
Rinse in lukewarm water before first use. No dishwasher and no high temperatures.
Wipe it right after use. The shine of the pewter changes naturally over time.
Idea: serve the sake with edamame, nuts or a piece of hard cheese.
Good to know: serve chilled or warm depending on the sake: a junmai suits both, a ginjō is best chilled.
