Chasen, bamboo matcha whisk
Product description
The chasen is the traditional Japanese whisk used to prepare matcha. Carved from a single piece of bamboo, it has fine, flexible tines that blend the tea and bring a light foam to the surface of the bowl.
In Japan, preparing matcha gives an essential place to the precision of the gesture, the quality of the objects and the time you take. The chasen is one of its best-known symbols.
Why Léonard chose it
“ I became interested in the chasen because its apparent simplicity contrasts with the precision of how it is used, and because seeing it in the hands of my wife's father made me want to understand this traditional Japanese object better. ”
Origin and craft
Takayama, in Nara Prefecture, is recognised as the historic centre of chasen making in Japan. Craftsmen there work the bamboo into many fine, even tines while keeping the flexibility needed to prepare tea. This model follows that tradition; the exact workshop and craftsman have yet to be identified.
Details
- Japanese name: chasen (茶筅)
- Material: natural bamboo
The gesture
- Pour a little lukewarm water over the tines to soften them.
- Put about 1 to 2 g of sifted matcha in a bowl.
- Add 60 to 80 ml of hot water, ideally around 70 to 80 °C.
- Whisk briskly in M or W movements, without pressing the tines against the bottom of the bowl.
- When the surface becomes lightly frothy, the matcha is ready.
Care
After each use, gently rinse the whisk in clear water, without detergent. Let it air-dry, preferably on a chasen holder that helps it keep its shape. Avoid pulling or twisting the tines, and do not store it damp in a closed container. Bamboo is a natural material: slight variations in colour, texture or shape are normal.
An object made to be used
Over time the tines wear or break: this is normal, and the chasen is replaced when it no longer works properly.
