Tenmoku tenmoku
Stoneware chawan, tenmoku glaze
Black and purple tenmoku chawan
Pickup currently not available
Product description
This hand-thrown stoneware bowl features a dark, almost black glaze, streaked with purple highlights and pink speckles that catch the light depending on the angle. This type of glaze, rich in iron oxide, belongs to the tenmoku family, known for the metallic and shifting effects achieved in the kiln. The foot, free of glaze, reveals the bare beige-brown clay.
Its flared shape and narrow foot are those of a chawan, the bowl used for whisking matcha tea with a bamboo whisk before drinking directly, held with both hands to feel its warmth. It works just as well as an individual rice bowl for those who do not yet have a tea ritual; the form remains the same.
This piece is unsigned, and I cannot attribute it to a specific workshop. Tenmoku is a very ancient family of glazes, used today by many contemporary Japanese potters as well as historic traditions: it is difficult to decide with certainty based on the photo alone.
Care: hand washing recommended; avoid the dishwasher and sudden temperature changes to preserve the iridescent sheen of the glaze.
Estimated dimensions: approximately 12.5 cm in diameter, 6 cm in height (to be confirmed by direct measurement).
