Product description

This lot brings together two pieces of Japanese lacquerware, a natsume (a tea caddy for the tea ceremony) and a kōgō (a small incense box), both decorated with the same motif: golden pine trees in maki-e, unfolding across the glossy black lacquer onto the lid.

The pine, or matsu in Japanese, is a classic motif in lacquerware and prints, symbolizing longevity and resilience. Here, it is rendered in gold powder applied to the damp lacquer, with enough detail to distinguish the needles and the bark of the trunk.

These two pieces form a coherent set, intended to accompany a tea or incense ceremony, and are passed down today as much as works of art as utensils.

Care: use a soft, dry cloth, without water or abrasive products, to preserve the lacquer and the maki-e gilding.
