Product description

Some objects have an immediate purpose. These three yunomi are among them. The form is that of the quintessential Japanese teacup: slightly flared at the top, without a handle, held in both hands to feel the warmth through the stoneware. The milky white glaze reveals a sandy-ochre drip at the bottom, a trace of the firing, a trace of the hand. On each cup, hand-painted sakura cherry blossoms in pink-red: rounded petals, stamens drawn with a fine line, a few scattered flowers as if carried by the wind. No two flowers are exactly alike. The slightly irregular rim reminds us that these cups were thrown, not molded. They are made for morning green tea, evening hojicha, or a seasonal infusion. They are also made to be brought out in April, when the cherry trees bloom, and to remind us for the rest of the year that this beauty always returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a yunomi traditionally held?

With both hands, without a handle, to feel the warmth through the stoneware.

Can they go in the dishwasher?

With care, but washing by hand is better.

How many cups are included?

The set includes 3 yunomi.

How to use it?

A yunomi is a Japanese cup without a handle, held with both hands to drink green tea.
What it is for: you serve everyday tea in it, sencha, hōjicha or bancha. With no handle, it warms your hands as you drink.
Serve a Japanese green tea in them: sencha, gyokuro, hojicha or bancha.
Hold the yunomi in both hands, there is no handle: this is the traditional Japanese way and lets you feel the warmth through the stoneware.
Wash by hand if possible. The dishwasher is possible with care.
The unglazed stoneware foot may stain slightly: set them on a saucer.
Idea: pair the tea with something small and sweet, a mochi, a sesame biscuit or a square of dark chocolate.
Good to know: rinse with hot water before serving, so the tea stays at the right temperature longer.
