Product description

Hand-thrown stoneware with a slightly curved silhouette. The top of the cup features a speckled ash glaze, almost sand-like to the visual touch, which then descends into an indigo blue gradient before darkening to a deep black near the base. This gradual transition from one shade to the next evokes a horizon, never repeating itself in exactly the same way on any two cups. The unglazed foot reveals raw, reddish clay and the marks of hand-throwing.

A cup of this size and height is meant to be held for daily green tea (yunomi) rather than left sitting on a saucer: its thick walls retain heat, and the gradient running across it is fully revealed once the cup is in hand and turned toward the light.

A piece without a signature or visible mark under the base: it is impossible to attribute this glaze flow to a specific workshop or ceramist. We therefore remain cautious about its exact origin, while being able to describe with certainty the technique employed: a layering of hand-poured glazes.

Care: hand washing is recommended to preserve the matte finish of the speckled area. Avoid sudden thermal shocks.

Estimated dimensions: diameter 8 to 9 cm, height 8 to 9 cm (to be confirmed by direct measurement).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the blue gradient of this cup the same on every piece?

No, this gradual shift from one shade to another never repeats in exactly the same way on two cups.

What is a yunomi?

An everyday green tea cup that you hold in your hand rather than leave on the table.

What does the unglazed foot reveal?

A raw reddish clay and the marks of hand throwing.

How to use it?

A yunomi is a Japanese cup without a handle, held with both hands to drink green tea.
What it is for: you serve everyday tea in it, sencha, hōjicha or bancha. With no handle, it warms your hands as you drink.
Use it as an everyday green tea cup (yunomi): its thick wall keeps the warmth in the hand.
Hold it at eye level: its indigo blue gradient is fully revealed.
Wash by hand to preserve the matte finish of the speckled part. Avoid sudden temperature changes.
Idea: pair the tea with something small and sweet, a mochi, a sesame biscuit or a square of dark chocolate.
Good to know: rinse with hot water before serving, so the tea stays at the right temperature longer.

Everyday green tea (sencha), or to your preference (hot or cold sake).
