Product description
The gissha is the ox-drawn carriage of the Japanese nobility of the Heian period, between the 9th and 12th centuries. Court ladies, poets, and lords traveled in them through Kyoto, curtains drawn, amidst the rustle of silk. This small celadon porcelain box reproduces its form with affectionate precision: the slightly curved roof with upturned corners, the carriage body decorated with incised floral scrolls, the spoked wheel carved into the solid piece, and the protruding pole and shafts. The grey-green celadon glaze covers the whole in a single sweep, uniform and soft to the touch. The lid lifts off: the box is functional, designed to hold incense, a seal, or a few small precious items. It is a cabinet piece, made to sit on a desk, a tokonoma shelf, or a coffee table. It does not need to be explained to be appreciated. But once you know what it represents, you look at it differently.
