Product description

How to use it

Slide a sheet of nori between the two gear rollers, turn the crank, and the rollers pull and slice the sheet into fine filaments that fall directly into the transparent tray below. Cutting the sheet just before serving preserves the crispness and aroma of the toasted seaweed.

Why it is different

Unlike a blade that cuts by pressure, the two gear rollers pull the nori sheet through and tear it progressively tooth by tooth, a principle closer to a geared paper cutter than a knife. There are no metal blades: this is what allows you to slice a material as thin and brittle as nori without crumbling it to bits.

Why this cutter rather than ready-made nori flakes

Freshly cut nori retains its full aroma, unlike pre-prepared flakes that quickly lose their flavor once the package is opened. Use it to sprinkle over a rice bowl, udon soup, okonomiyaki, or Japanese curry by cutting it directly over the dish.

Why I chose it

“I chose this cutter because it brings a little touch of precision to a very simple action. Cutting a nori sheet might seem trivial, but quickly obtaining uniform pieces really changes the preparation and presentation. I especially like these small tools that take up almost no space but quickly become useful once you've adopted them.”

You will like it if

  • you regularly cook rice bowls, udon, okonomiyaki, or Japanese curry
  • you prefer freshly cut nori over store-bought flakes
  • you are looking for a small, practical tool that takes up almost no space

It is probably not for you if

  • you never use nori in your cooking
  • you prefer an all-in-one utensil rather than an accessory dedicated to a single task

In practice

Dimensions 15.6 x 7 x 10 cm. Easily disassembled: wash the rollers and tray with soapy water and dry thoroughly before reassembling to prevent nori residue from sticking to the teeth.

An object designed to last

Made in Japan by Akebono Sangyo, a manufacturer specializing in small kitchen utensils, this cutter is designed for frequent use and simple maintenance, with no blades to sharpen or replace.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this cutter work?

You slide a sheet of nori between two toothed rollers in hard plastic, turn the crank, and the rollers cut it into fine strands that fall into the clear tray.

Why cut it yourself rather than buy ready-made nori flakes?

Freshly cut nori keeps all its aroma, unlike flakes prepared in advance, which quickly lose their taste once the packet is opened.

Which dishes is it for?

On a bowl of rice, an udon soup, okonomiyaki or a Japanese curry, cutting straight over the dish just before serving.

How to use it?

A nori cutter slices a sheet of nori seaweed into thin, even strips.
What it is for: you slide in the sheet and turn the crank. The strips top rice, noodles, soups or salads.
Slide a sheet of nori between the two toothed rollers and turn the handle: the sheet is cut into fine strands that fall into the clear tray.
Cut it just before serving, right over a bowl of hot rice or miso soup, to keep the crispness and aroma of the toasted seaweed.
The cutter comes apart: wash the rollers and tray in soapy water and dry well before reassembling so nori does not stick to the teeth.
Idea: keep it within reach of your worktop, it is a tool you will use daily.
Good to know: a well-kept tool lasts for years: dry it after each use and store it somewhere dry.

Rice with crumbled nori and sesame seeds (homemade furikake), or udon topped with fresh nori cut just before serving (at your discretion).
